February 5, 2009 The news page has not been updated in some time. It is my plan to update it on at least a monthly basis so come back often to keep up with what is happening in Scouting.
Training Leaders are required to complete training for any new role assumed in Scouting within their first year in that role. Many of you have been receiving reminders that training is due this year. There are a very few who are beyond the one year requirement for training. These leaders can apply for an extension or exemption to the Area Commissioner. Woodbadge 1 courses are available for all sections during the remainder of this Scouting year so there should be an opportunity for everyone to fulfill this requirement. Requirements aside - Scouts Canada training is informative and valuable for other areas of our lives too.
FriendfestFriendfest is coming up. This year it will be a little different in order to take advantage of reduced national registration fees that come into effect on 1 March. Take a look at this link to get more details on Friendfest. http://www.voyageur.scouts.ca/index1.htm
RecognitionVoyageur Council has set a goal to recognize 10% of our leaders this year through the award of Scouts Canada national and other awards. One of those “other” awards will be the new Odawa Award which is being developed to recognize exceptional leadership at the section and group level. Typically those who receive this award will have at least three years service at the section or group level and will be those leaders who are instrumental in providing program for our youth members by doing that extra little bit. This award will be used to recognize youth leaders (Kim, Keeo, SIT or activity leaders) who have done an exceptional job over a two year period. The full requirements will be published soon. An Odawa Area Awards night is tentatively planned for 1 May to present the first of these awards and hopefully several national awards. So if you know someone who deserves to be recognized for all they do for Scouting write them up. Our DAC Honours and Awards, Patrick Wall is there to help you. Take a look at the Recognition page on this website for some recent awards.
Succession PlanningWe all know that some leaders will be moving on in the next Scouting year whether they are finished with Scouting, posted or moving to anther Scouting position. Now is the time to start planning who will replace these valuable leaders. All groups need to have a Succession Plan in place to make sure that our sections are able to start up as soon as possible in the fall. September is one of the best times for Scouting activities but if we are running around trying to figure out who our leaders are our youth miss out on the best that the Scouting program has to offer. We will be running a Woodbadge 1 in Odawa in the late spring that is specifically designed for those who will be transitioning from on section to another.
Commissioners Quality Award I’m almost afraid to mention this topic given how the delivery has been inconsistent over the past few years but… I have a few Commissioners Quality Awards available for last year that are available and will present them to the first groups to apply. I know here are a lot of groups out there who qualify so look at the application which can be found at the following link and get them in. First come first awarded. http://www.voyageur.scouts.ca/index1.htm look for the forms page. Now would be a good time to look at applications for the 2008/2009 award too.
February Meeting of Area CouncilThe February meeting of Odawa Area Council will be held on 24 February at Orleans United Church. We will meet at 7:30 which will give anyone who wants to the chance to have a pancake dinner sponsored by 8th Orleans Scout Group.
